Introduction to CPAP Accessories Every Sleep Apnea Sufferer Must Know

It’s the beginning of a new year and a new decade. For everyone who continues to struggle with the effects of sleep apnea, there is no time like the present to fully address the challenges. Because you are already diagnosed and actively utilize sleep apnea equipment, here are a few simple fixes which can help with comfort and effectiveness. Without being satisfied with your equipment, your compliance and, thus, your sleep will be negatively affected.

Firstly, there is now small, quiet, and well designed CPAP machines which can take the place of that oversized loud and bulky CPAP machine. Manufacturers such as Resmed, Respironics and Fisher & Paykel have designed CPAP machines for the new era and packed new, effective technology into a small package. Either for travel or home use, such features as auto adjusting, assessment of Apnea Hypopnea Index (AHI), leak and flow limitations, and even detecting changes in environmental conditions, creates a technology level never before seen in CPAP therapy.

Secondly, CPAP patients should not be afraid to try something different. Just tolerating CPAP therapy usually ends up with poor compliance. Also, many patients have been given old technology or a poor fitting mask by their local supplier because it was the cheapest available or only product stocked. However, the mask interface platforms of the various manufacturers have also been redesigned. New technology including double gel cushions, auto seal technology and streamline designs have made for more comfortable and quiet CPAP masks. A properly fitted and comfortable mask will increase compliance dramatically. Many CPAP patients tend to have a few CPAP masks in order to rotate them so pressure points are not negatively affected. Lastly, it is important to do the little things which positively affect CPAP therapy such as changing filters, adding mask strap pads and utilizing mask wipes and disinfectants to kill bacteria. Filters should be changed regularly and it is suggested to always have a ready supply. Without changing filters, air quality suffers and the machine works harder to meet the user’s needs. Mask strap pads have become quite popular as many people suffer from “mask strap” embarrassment. These strap pads help eliminate forehead and cheek irritation due to the headgear and can even make the mask more stable. Finally, it is very important to wash and disinfect CPAP mask on a daily basis. During the winter with colds and flu more prevalent, the CPAP mask is the perfect breeding ground for germs and bacteria. Without disinfecting daily, the mask will contribute to catching colds and flu.

If a few of these suggestions are decided upon, it is important to speak with a professional capable of suggesting the optimal equipment for each individual situation. We, at The CPAP Shop, can suggest small fixes like filters or wipes to full CPAP therapy packages.
